Modern and classic doors from the top shelf
in one house.
A very beautiful, high-class villa in early modernist style, which was also a bit worn and tired, has been thoroughly renovated.
The original style of the house has been infused with classic patrician style, as seen in the builder’s choice of Vahle glass doors and partitions between two of the living rooms and on the upper floor. Downstairs, the style is completely different and very modern. Solid Douglas fir doors and interior were chosen as a modern response to the original style of the house.

“I was allowed to choose from the top shelf in this project,” says architect Rasmus Frimer Andersen, and elaborates, “It wasn’t because it had to be expensive, but it had to be nice, comfortable and delicious, and not least – it had to be familiar to the house. “
This challenge is solved by combining elements from different architectural styles.
“The big challenge in this project was that I definitely didn’t want to change anything in the architecture without justifying it by being better than what was already there. Therefore, my starting point was that if I was going to change the style of the house, it had to be done with very high quality materials and craftsmanship. Only then could I justify changing the style,” explains architect Rasmus Frimer Andersen/2R Architects.
Multiple architectural styles work together
The overall solution for the house renovation was to retain the original style of the house in large parts of the house, with the addition of a bit of romantic style. The entire lower floor, a small extension, the stairwell and the kitchen were renovated in a more modern style. This means that both modern and classic doors help to create a unified look throughout the building.
The original style of the house, infused with classic patrician style, can be seen in the builder’s choice of glass doors and partitions, as seen here between two of the living rooms and on the upper floor. Glass door and glass section are produced by Vahle.
Modern doors tied together with the original through high-quality materials
The lower floor is distinctly different from much of the rest of the house and has a style all of its own. The developer has chosen a very modern look. The doors are infill doors with plank infills made of solid Douglas wood and are an integral part of the architecture, as the door is part of a shelving wall. This way, the door and wall blend together as a whole. The choice of light-colored wood works harmoniously with the other materials in the house.
“It has been a pleasure working with Vahle on this project. You have both the breadth of classic and modern, and you offer a variety of options, all of which are well thought out and of a high standard. It was a very skilled master carpenter who recommended you. It is thanks to you and all the other skilled manufacturers and craftsmen we have worked with that we end up with a result that both we and the client are very satisfied with.”
