The Grey Lighthouse is restored with panel doors that reproduce the original expression

The Grey Lighthouse in Skagen

The Grey Lighthouse stands majestic in its exterior,

and has been lovingly renovated inside.

The Grey Lighthouse in Skagen preserves the authentic architecture with hand-painted, new panel doors in exact replicas of the originals.

Hand-painted doors continue the original style.

The goal of the renovation of the old lighthouse was to preserve the original architectural expression. That’s why Vahle delivered the doors unpainted, so that after installation they could be hand-painted with a brush to match the original look. In addition to the lighthouse tower itself,The Grey Lighthouse consists of a lighthouse keeper’s house and two outbuildings.

The doors are reconstructions of the original doors and painted by hand to look authentic.

At Hotel Randers, the panl doors are also painted by hand to convey the spirit of the hotel.

No one can tell that the panel doors are new

Elgaard Architecture is the general contractor for the project. CEO, architect Peder Elgaard, explains that

Vahle delivered the desired product based on the company’s measurements. He says that the new panel doors fit so naturally into the reconstructed historical whole that no one notices that the doors are new.

Renovating a listed building is a special task

The renovation of the Grey Lighthouse was a special task, says project manager Jens Christian Kristensen from the construction company Arne Andersen Vrå A/S, which was responsible for the carpentry, joinery and roofing work. The job stands out, he explains, because it’s a listed building where the renovation is required to be done in the old style.

Information center for bird and nature enthusiasts

In May 2017, the Grey Lighthouse opened as an information center for bird and nature enthusiasts. The center is run by the Danish Nature Agency together with the Danish Ornithological Society, Frederikshavn Municipality and Turisthus Nord. The lighthouse is owned by Realdania By & Byg, the owner of the project.
