Smykkeskrinet in Aarhus

Listed building is being carefully renovated and rebuilt.

The former State Library and Business Archive, also known as Smykkeskrinet (jewelry box), is one of Hack Kampmann’s most beautiful architectural imprints in Aarhus.

Smykkeskrinet has received the Carpentry Award 2021 for the completed and careful renovation of the building, which has now been converted into a modern courthouse and workplace.

Vahle has delivered both historic doors in exact replicas of the original and doors with a modern look.

The Carpentry Award 2021

In the future, Smykkeskrinet will house the Court of Aarhus. The honorable Carpentry Award 2021 for the Court of Aarhus is received by Rønnow Arkitekter on behalf of the team behind the extensive renovation and rebuilding, including Vahle.

Master carpenter Mads Raaschou, Guild Master of the Copenhagen Carpenters’ Guild and member of the award committee explains:

“The appreciation of wood and good craftsmanship can happen on many levels, and when all levels want the same thing, pure wood magic can happen. The restoration and rebuilding of the Court of Aarhus is an exemplary example of this.”

An architectural and craftsmanship masterpiece

Inge-Lise Kragh, architect and partner at Rønnow Arkitekter, talks about the award:

“It is a great pleasure for Rønnow Arkitekter and the entire team behind the project that the restoration and rebuilding of the Court in Aarhus is awarded the honorable Carpentry Award this year. It is a fantastic project that everyone involved has approached with the utmost care, passion and professional pride. The building was born as an architectural and craftsmanship masterpiece, and this has been the benchmark for everyone involved throughout the project. The approach has been to take the existing building as a starting point and balance the fulfillment of the needs of the new function with consideration for the building’s conservation values.”

Exact replicas for old buildings

Vahle has provided exact replicas of the beautiful historic doors in the building, which have also been upgraded to meet modern fire requirements. The classic doors are beautifully crafted in mahogany with brass details.

Vahle also supplied modern-style doors for the modern remodel.
