Architect-designed villa

Nordic style inspired by a Swiss Alpine chalet.

Nordic architecture meets Swiss Alpine chalet ambience in this very accomplished new build villa, set on a sloping plot with panoramic water views. The villa was conceived and designed based on two fundamental ideas, combining a typical Swiss Alpine chalet with the Nordic building style, architecture and choice of materials.

It was the sloping terrain that inspired the idea of building a Swiss-inspired house. Alpine huts in Switzerland are characterized by having a solid bottom with a light top. This is reflected in this project with a house cast in-situ with a solid lower floor and a transparent upper floor with a large window facing the sea.

Stepping down the stairs to the lower floor gives the feeling of entering a warm and comfortable cave. Warm, tactile materials provide a great counterpoint to the raw concrete walls. Upstairs, it’s the impressive panoramic water views, the abundance of light from the windows mixed with the materials and interiors that create an atmosphere of air and lightness.

Nordic inspiration in every detail

Nordic inspiration runs throughout the villa, with the vast majority of materials originating from the Nordic region. One example is the floors, which are made throughout in the classic Alta slate, which was used extensively in the classic architect-designed houses of the 1970s.

The client says: “All the interior doors are from Vahle and are made of oak, and all floors are with the classic Alta natural slate from Norway, which is characterized by being a rustic and slightly raw counterpart to the beautiful, uniform oak doors.”

It’s not only the architecture that is inspired by the Nordic building style, as owner has also prioritized that the materials as far as possible should not be imported from outside the Nordic countries. On the outside, this can be seen in the facade, which is clad in Norwegian Douglas fir, which has been given a transparent black-brown treatment.

Doors and colors add warmth to architecture

“Having chosen Alta slate for all the floors in the house, we had to add warmth to the house in another way, and here the doors play an important role. The oak doors add a pleasant warmth to the atmosphere of the house along with carefully selected colors inspired by Le Corbusier’s color scheme.

Downstairs, all the doors are Dinesen LAYERS by Vahle doors, produced from Dinesen oak planks and designed by architect Rasmus Bak from Baks Arkitekter. The doors blend beautifully with the raw floor and concrete walls, adding warmth and softness to the architecture and acoustics.

Upstairs is a very open and bright environment with only two doors. The bathroom door is solid, as in the lower floor, and there is a sliding oak glass door to a room. The glass door is made with a special type of glass that is only partially transparent and has a beautiful ribbed surface with clear references to the functional architecture of the 70s.

Welcome to a quality villa that is both aesthetically and tastefully designed, and is a home that you want to live in.
