An iconic building with high ambitions on all parameters
The ambition with Carlsberg’s new headquarters has been to build a place that strikes a chord that can embrace many people. Carlsberg is both a popular institution and a cultural carrier for Denmark, and the premises will also be the headquarters for the whole world. The building must also be a pleasant house to live in, be of high quality and have elegance.
It was important for Carlsberg that the new headquarters should be located exactly where it is, even though it has been quite complicated to build in the middle of a residential area with a lot of water and a hilly landscape. This means that the house is shaped by its location in a beautiful and organic way.
Simple material selection with deep and wide references
“Very few materials have been chosen. What they have in common is that they are noble, they patinate beautifully and they speak to the rest of the fine building”,
explains architect Vivianna Schøttz Andersen.
The colors in the material selection are golden and range from very light to very dark. Therefore, the floors are made of light bamboo and light terrazzo, while the doors are completely dark and made of smoked oak. Copper was chosen for the glazing in reference to both the copper roof and the copper boilers. Brass is also used to represent gold, such as in the Carlsberg logo.
Smoked oak – gives nobility and is experienced as a flavorful, heavy and dark beer
All floors of the building are built identically, with the wood panels in smoked oak intended to create an experience in itself through the nobility of the material. Smoky oak also draws references to a rich, heavy, dark beer.
Fire and sound doors that meet client requirements
The doors are produced as both fire and sound doors. Depending on the location in the building, the doors have either BD30 or BD60 approvals and also meet different sound requirements.
As an audience member, you can look forward to Carlsberg opening up their beautiful garden to the public whenever possible. The garden, originally made for Carl and Ottilia’s private villa, has many fine sculptures and pavilions. The new part of the garden is designed with great respect for the existing garden. Water has been an important element in the design of the new romantic garden, which features curved paths, a lake and a spring that trickles along the new headquarters. From the garden, you can take a peek into the exciting atrium that is the heart of the building.
At Vahle, we are extremely proud that we have been given the privilege of delivering to a building that in every way represents high quality, aesthetics and thoughtfulness. We build doors that will last for at least 100 years, and Carlsberg has a new headquarters that fits a format with at least as long a lifespan.
“We chose Vahle because you had the best solution and because we already had a good reference project from Bestseller. Ever since I first saw your door solution at Bestseller, I’ve been hooked. We got a great solution that both we and the client are extremely satisfied with, and we have had a good and solution-oriented collaboration with Vahle.”
